First responders such as police and fire personnel must find a balance between competing priorities when they respond to unplanned roadway incidents.
These include:
Protecting themselves and other emergency responders.
Treating the injured.
Making the situation known to passing motorists.
Securing the scene and protecting the integrity of any evidence.
Controlling traffic flow via lane closures and/or detours.
To date, only orange and fluorescent orange materials are approved for use in temporary traffic control situations. The lack of a separate color designated solely for the purpose of traffic incident management has often led to confusion amongst motorists. Independent research indicates that the color called "Fluorescent Coral" is the most visible and readily noticed of any color not yet designated by the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) for another purpose. The FHWA has proposed that the color "Fluorescent Coral" be adopted in the revision of Part VI of the MUTCD as the standard color for traffic signs at incidents. Use of the color "Fluorescent Coral" would be allowed for all traffic incident signing. The incident command kit comes with the new coral color sign for incident ahead warning. You get the sign and the stand and overlays with a bag to hold them. The overlays are held on by Velcro and supply you with several different legends.Now available with arrow overlay as well as "CRASH" and "SLOW" overlays.
